Chapter 8.

The sound of breaking glass and a string of curses woke Kara. Panic flushed the grogginess of sleep from her mind. Scrambling from beneath the rumpled blanket that was wrapped around her legs, she glanced wildly around her until the previous day’s events came flooding back.

Eddie—I’m in his house.

With the relief came the memory of what she had seen in his bedroom just a few hours earlier.

I still don’t know how he can possibly be a berserker, but that ax is real. I need to get to the bottom of this… and fast.

She jumped as the door behind her banged open and Eddie barged into the room, two steaming mugs in one hand and a plate of food in the other.

“Morning,” he said as he strode across the rug and placed the food and drink on to the table by the wall. “I made coffee and bacon sandwiches. I don’t have any ketchup—sorry. I dropped the blasted bottle and now the kitchen looks like someone has been massacred there.”

Kara had no idea what he meant by ‘ketchup’, but then again, she didn’t know what coffee or bacon was either. Her stomach gurgled loudly as the smell of the food teased her nostrils and she hurried over to look at what he had brought her. Slices of white bread were pressed together around what she realized, with a feeling of hungry disappointment, were pieces of some kind of meat.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, “I don’t eat meat… but it smells nice.”

She grabbed one of the steaming mugs and took a hasty sip of the dark liquid it contained, her nose wrinkling at the bitter taste.

“Sugar?” Eddie asked.

“Will it make it taste a bit better?”

He grinned. “I guess that depends on how much you want to put in.”

He headed out of the room and returned a few moments later with a pot filled with a white substance and a small spoon.

“How many?” he asked.

“Erm, one to start with, please.”

Eddie added it to her drink, stirred twice, then stepped back, his eyes fixed on her as she sipped again. It wasn’t much better, but she gave him a smile.

“Thank you.”

He placed the pot of sugar down on the table and helped himself to one of the bacon sandwiches.

Kara eyed him over the rim of her mug as he ate.

“May I?” he asked, pointing at the remaining sandwich.

“Help yourself.”

“You sure you don’t want anything else?” Eddie took a big bite out of the sandwich.

Kara shook her head as she moved over to the sofa and sat down, sipping her coffee in silence until he finished his food and turned to look at her.

“Well,” he said. “What are your plans then?”

Kara shrugged. “I really don’t know. This place is all so strange. I have no idea how to find Loki, or even what I am going to do if I actually manage to find him.”

She was desperate to ask him about what she had witnessed the previous night but had no idea how to broach the subject.
